Using Thunderbird as an RSS Feed Reader

You can make Thunderbird your RSS feed reader so that your mail and RSS feeds are in the same program.

Step 1: Set up an RSS/Blog account.

  1. In Thunderbird, go to File → New → Account.
  2. Select RSS News & Blogs
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter the account name (eg. My RSS Feeds) and click Next and then Finish.

Step 2: For each RSS feed you want to add, subscribe.

  1. In the folders pane, right-click on the new account (eg. My RSS Feeds).
  2. Click Subscribe.
  3. Click Add and enter the URL for the feed and click OK.

Note: This does not include listservs.

When I converted from Eudora to Thunderbird, I also imported my OPML file of RSS feeds that I had previously used in NewzCrawler.

My opinon of Tbird's implementation of RSS was that it was very weak and did not provide for the high productivity of other products.

I found an open source RSSOwl app (multiplatform) that meets my needs.
