How to Get the Filepath & Filename into a Word Document Footer

  1. If you already have a footer in your document, start by clicking on it, then press Enter to advance to the next line, where your filename/path will be inserted without writing over existing footer text.
  2. If you don't have a footer, go to the ribbon and click the Insert tab. Then, in the Header & Footer group, click Footer, and select one of the footer choices.
  3. Once you have a footer, highlight one of its empty footer fields.
  4. Note the label above the ribbon called Header & Footer Tools. Click the Design tab beneath it. From the Design tab ribbon, find the Insert group, then click on the Quick Parts button, and choose Field.
  5. The Field dialog box opens, where you can choose the following:
    • Categories: All
    • Field names: FileName
    • Field options: Add path to filename
