What is a VPN?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN allows you to be part of a private network, like the Libraries network, from any public connection.
Did you ever need to access a resource when you weren't "wired in" to the Libraries network? What you need is the VPN client.
Downloading the VPN Client
- Penn State faculty, staff and students can download the VPN client from https://downloads.its.psu.edu/. (Individuals without a Penn State Access Account cannot access the VPN.)
- Click Connecting to Penn State.
- Next to the row beside VPN - Virtual Private Network, click your operating system (Windows, Mac, etc.). Select and install the most recent version for download; it will have the highest number.
Which VPN Do I Use?
Want to know which VPN to use to connect from the road or from home? Take a look at the chart below:
Which VPN? | Where Can I Use It? | Why Would I Use It? |
---|---|---|
ITS Wireless at [Campus] | on campus only | wireless internet access on while on campus, as in ITS Wireless at University Park for University Park, ITS Wireless for Berks at Berks, ITS Wireless at Fayette for Fayette, etc. |
LIAS-VPN* | off campus only | access to Penn State resources, and network shared drives plus psulias email, Libraries licensed resources, Libraries databases, and Google Scholar, etc. |
ISP to PSU* | off campus only | access to Penn State resources and network shared drives only |
*Note: The number of concurrent connections to LIAS-VPN is limited, so if you cannot access LIAS-VPN try ISP to PSU instead.
